From the Dark Empire comic series by Dark Horse, a reborn Palpatine transfers his consciousness into a younger cloned body six years after his death at Endor — nearly succeeding in turning Luke Skywalker to the dark side. Part of the 1998 Expanded Universe sub-line where Kenner drew from comics, novels, and video games, with each figure packaged with a cardboard 3-D diorama.

The clamshell outer robes are removable, revealing a detailed costume underneath that takes some creative liberties beyond what appeared in the comics. Clone Emperor Palpatine gets seven points of articulation — one more than most EU figures in the wave — thanks to a swivel left wrist that helps with lightsaber posing. The lightsaber shares the same sculpt used for Leia and Luke in the Expanded Universe wave. The head sculpt captures the younger, more sinister clone body well for the era.
